Mary and her parents Joachim and Anna

Anna teaching little Mary how to pray

Mary of Nazareth is a wonderful Lady. Her parents, Joachim her father and Anna her mother, were childless for many years.
Anna used to get very sad, as she and her husband dearly wanted children.
One day Anna went to the garden, sat under a laurel tree and prayed to God, "God of my ancestors, bless me and hear my prayer, just as you blessed our mother Sarah and gave her son Isaac to her".
  Angel Gabriel came to visit Anna, and told her;
"Anna, Anna, the Lord God has heard your prayer; you will have a baby and your child shall be blessed by all the world."
Anna was very excited. She promised that the little child would serve God very well.
Anna would teach the child properly to respect and love God, and to live with respect and holiness.

Angel Gabriel came to visit Joachim.
He said, "Do not be afraid, I am the Angel of the Lord, and it is God Himself Who sends me. He has heard your prayers; your alms have come before His Presence.
Anna, your wife, will have a baby daughter whose happiness will be above that of other women; she will be blessed, and named the Mother of eternal blessing.
You will name the child Mary and consecrate her to God when the time comes. The Holy Spirit, from her very first moment, will dwell in her soul, and He will accomplish in her many great things."
  Then Angel Gabriel left Joachim.
Joachim was very happy that he and Anna were going to have a little baby girl.
When Joachim came home with his flocks of sheep, Anna ran out and hugged him happily. She told him, "Now I know the Lord has blessed me greatly."
She said this because she knew they were going to have a little baby.

Mary's mother Anna was born of the tribe of King David.
The name of Anna in Hebrew is written as 'Hannah', which means 'Grace'.
Mary's father Joachim was of the tribe of Judah and the family of David. He was a shepherd in Nazareth.

When Mary was born, Joachim and Anna looked after her until she was three years old.
Then they took Mary to the holy Temple in Jerusalem. Mary's parents taught her from her earliest days how to worship and love God.
Dear and holy Anna, Jesus' maternal grandmother, is known by the title 'Forbear of God'.

Anna was so sad when Mary and Joseph had to leave Nazareth for Bethlehem.
Mary and Joseph and Baby Jesus had to flee to Egypt after Jesus was born, so Jesus could be kept safe from King Herod who wanted to hurt Jesus.
Herod was jealous that Jesus was going to be the greatest King that ever lived, and didn't want that to happen.

Grannie Anna was thrilled when the little Family returned from Egypt when all was safe again.
She hugged and kissed her daughter Mary, the sweet little Baby Jesus, and her good son-in-law Joseph who took such good care of them.
Anna made food, let the little family rest well, and help them clean up their new house so they could stay comfortably.
Both Anna and Joachim were so proud of Joseph being an excellent carpenter, and of Mary for being such a good daughter.   Anna and Joachim loved little Baby Jesus. He was too cute.
Anna loved Jesus popping in and out of their home. They were good grandparents to Jesus.
It is good for family to love one another.
